Being a barbarian, and not inclined to do much in the way of forward planning, I'm going to spend the whole lot now. I have my eye on a few things that hopefully will be useful.

Quick question for OW, if someone dies, can the others recover their equipment? So if I die, can one of the little guys pick up my sword? (not that they'd be able to lift it)

The simple answer to your question is that no warrior may retrieve what another warrior was carrying when they die. However, certain key items, like the Lantern, the One Ring, and etc... (usually quest or game functionality related things) may be recovered by the others.

Also, I might make some exceptions depending upon the circumstances and how dire the party's lot. emoticon But, usually the answer is no.

Oh, and yes, you may go ahead and place your shopping orders. Though you might list more than you can afford in case something becomes unavailable. A listing in the order of most important to you would be good.

The beginning gold is just to give everyone a little something extra to prepare for the journey.

I am not too sure how realistic this game will get, but likely I will mostly not stray too far from the normal rules (including my own), except as it relates to the amount of gold you get from monster kills. Experience (and maybe a little gold -- we shall see how things "pan out", lol) will be required to advance levels; gold will be useful at times, but who knows how useful given the nature of this game and how things could evolve in various ways. The future is very uncertain -- even in the mind of the God of Machinations (GM).

The future always in motion it is...

Re: Chat and Orders

In that case, my preferred shopping list would be a trancestone (150 gold), bandages (40 gold) and a spare knife (35 gold). I figure I should be able to get my hands on everything there with the trance stone being the first to sell out, so, if that goes, I'll take a leather helm (90 gold) and some provisions (50 gold) instead.

quote:

*mutters to self about poorly stocked stores*
*stalks over to the counter, places right foot on the low surface and pushes a knife into his boot, grabs a trance stone and, after juggling it from one hand to the other a few times, puts it in a pouch on his belt*
*drops a pouch of gold coins on the counter and grunts to the store keeper*
Bandages
*these too disappear into a belt pouch*

Would ya then be so kind as to move me out of the shop and away from the hobbits (somewhere slightly south of Gandalf).

Shopping

Okay, to help expedite things, I have moved Ryhart out and all the hobbits into the store.

Everyone may try to purchase whatever they want. Just please give your order of preference for the items in case the store runs out of anything. Some things have already been purchased and warrior info's adjusted. So, check your warrior's info topic first for gold left and items in possession, before placing your further shopping orders.

I will sort it all out once everyone's shopping list is posted here. emoticon This way, hopefully, we can soon move on to the "before-journey" meal.

EDIT: I will treat the entire shopping scene as turn #1. emoticon

Bandages only cost 40 gold each AND a Leather Helm costs 90 gold! So... how does Dot want to revise his shopping list?

EDIT: Also, I forgot to list that Elanor already had one bundle of arrows. If this changes your shopping list, Starfighter, please say so here. emoticon

If anyone wants to loan Elanor 10 gold pieces, she will then purchase a Bandage. Just a reminder in case someone missed Starfighter's mention of this.

Otherwise, I think I have everyone's gold and equipment/info correct. If you see anything out of order, please let me know. emoticon

So, Elanor also purchases a Bandage, thanks to her fellow hobbit, Turkish. I will also assume that Toddwin accepts this generosity (30 gold from Turkish) and purchases a Bandage as well.

These transactions leave Turkish with 30 gold in his purse... emoticon

Turn 2 -- Scene Two: The Nimble Nook

The party makes their way to the Nimble Nook Bed & Breakfasts... The hobbits and Dot sit down around the table with Gandalf, while Ryhart maintains some distance from the hobbits, keeping watch just inside the door.

Gandalf seems a bit lost in intent thought as the hobbits squirm about and wonder what comes next....

Turk leafs through the guest registry or somesuch book that was just sitting there not five steps from the front door.

He just hopes that him, toddwin, and and elanor are here for the welcoming part once they find Bilbo, and best leave the planning and hard thinks to the taller folk.

quote:

When we get back to the shire i'm gonna buy everyone there a bandage, think about they'll all be thanking me and i could do with all the love to be true emoticon

glad the shopping is over. next time we should all just give our monies to gandalf and let him spree buy. He's wise and all anyhow, probably put it to better use.

The Guest Book

While looking through the Guest Book, Turkish sees some interesting entries from about a year ago. Among the names listed there, he sees the following:

Thorin Oakenshield
Bilbo Baggins
Gandalf

Re: Chat and Orders

Looking up and appearing slightly startled by the hobbit's question, Gandalf begins speaking slowly, quietly and in a somber tone.

quote:

Image Turkish, Thorin Oakenshield was the head dwarf in a party of thirteen who were to head off to the Lonely Mountain to recover their long-lost treasure hidden there. Perhaps I should say it was not so much hidden as guarded by the dragon, Smaug.

Anyway, the dwarfs were afraid that their number of thirteen would be quite unlucky, so I agreed to get them a fourteenth member for their party. One whom I also hoped would prove to be a useful thief who could "steal" back their treasure for them.

Bilbo Baggins was the one I recommended, knowing that his Tookish blood would likely persuade him to go off on the adventure. By joining this party of dwarves, I thought both the dwarves and the hobbit would mutually benefit from the proceedings, the Dwarves by regaining their treasure and Bilbo by getting his fourteenth share of the treasure.

But, alas! What has become of the party is beyond my knowledge, for I had become quite preoccupied with other... more pressing matters.

Then, with a serious countenance and in an increasingly stern voice, Gandalf goes into more detail...

quote:

There are various evil things going on about the whole land. Ancient evils, which have been stirring for some time now, have begun to come out into the open. Why, even as I speak, there are some evil forces moving about the Shire itself. Even Hobbiton may not be exempted before long.

I hesitate to say this, but I think that you will soon enough see some of these things firsthand. The dark lord, Sauron by name, has again established his reign in the Dark Tower of Mordor. He has sent out spies, search parties, Ringwraiths upon black horses, and other creatures to find The One Ring. Whatever the cost, I must make sure that he does NOT acquire that ring. For if he does, it will be the end of peace and comfort for all the free peoples.

The rumors I have heard that have been spreading throughout the land are that a hobbit, or a halfling as some call them, has stumbled upon The One Ring. Normally I do not quickly believe rumors. Therefore, I have been conducting my own investigations. I have come to the conclusion that Bilbo, or someone of his size, found the ring and actually used it to disappear. There is a serious problem with putting it on and using it: it draws the attention of Sauron himself and some of his more sinister servants.

Then, after a long pause, Gandalf looks about the room, meeting each person's gaze and asks:

quote:

Does anyone have any questions? I must soon leave and this might be your only chance to question me. I am not sure whether we shall ever meet again, though I suspect we shall.

Turk looks distraught, so much bad tidings does not digest easily.

I'm rightabout scared, unsure as to what to do, and you say you have to leave. Elenor ya got some shire potatoes in that chef's box o'yours? I need some comfort food.

Re: Chat and Orders

quote:

Image Turkish, my dear hobbit, the things we must face scare even me, but we all have our part to do. Some must stay to defend the Shire, while others like yourselves must go off on another mission. Without your help to find Bilbo, I am afraid that nothing, and no one, could properly protect the Shire for very long. If everyone stayed home, the war would certainly overwhelm us all.

Besides, I believe that even hobbits can find much more courage than they think they have when the occasion calls for it. Remember that courage is not the absence of fear, but rather it is the doing of our duty inspite of the fear that we feel.

Re: Chat and Orders

quote:

Image Well, Ryhart, my friend, I have given your question much thought on my way to the Shire for this meeting. And, no matter which way I try to figure it out, it would seem best that you follow the original trail that Bilbo and the thriteen dwarves were to take. They were to take the road from Bywater to Bree and to continue on from there due East until they passed through Mirkwood to the River Running. From there they intended to follow the river North to the Lonely Mountain.

But, as I at least partially alluded to before, I am not too sure how far along they had gotten themselves before their plans might have changed. I recommend that you seek out those along the way that might be able to tell you more of the party's passing through and which way they may have taken.

I know an innkeeper in Bree who hears a lot of things, Butterburr I think his name is -- my memory fails me a little these days, since I have been long absent from many of my friends and acquaintences. Perhaps he could help you. But, before that, you might check with the hobbits in Bywater.

Other than that I have no more information as to which way to go. Doubtless you would be wise to learn all you can along the way and make more informed decisions at each fork in the road.

(see map of the Shire for some sense of direction relative to the references Gandalf made)
