Off Topic Things

Since I see several other games and various things pop up here once in a while, I thought it might be good to have an Off Topic topic. emoticon

I will make it sticky (at least for a while) just to help catch the reader's eye.

I will give this a try to see how it goes. But, remember that the rest of my message board rules will still apply -- except, of course, the part about being related to Warhammer Quest and Old Warrior. emoticon

Suggestion: Anyone who posts an off topic thing here might want to fill in the subject line so that others can identify and find the off topic subject more easily.

To start it off....

I just found that I might have saved myself a little money (a few US dollars) and time by taking the time to contact my web host's technical department. When all else fails use the "Contact Us" links. emoticon

Re: Contacting Your Web Host

I think this is a good idea, for us to be able to talk about anything that dawns on us. Or we feel like sharing.

I would like to share with you a few loves I have had for the last few years, some a game related, some are life related emoticon

Might aswell use the oppotunity to tell something about myself and my current situation aswell while im at it!

My name is Steffen, I live in Copenhagen Denmark (GMT+1). I work in a nursery with 1-3 year old children, and I love it.
Im currently in the process of figuring out what I want to do with my life. I have thought of getting an education which contiunes my work with children, but I think I might grow bored, or my body will break down, its a hard manual labour, lifting and that sort of things, bad body positions.

so, my current thought is to go to Uni and Study English, I hope you all think my english is good, well, I would like for it to get better, all the while making a living out of the language I love almost as much as my mother tounge.

My ultimate dream is to become a fantasy novel writer, As Oldwarrior knows, I have been trying to work on a book, but I keep finding myself short of good ideas and time to realize the ones I do have. But hopefully, one day you will see a Steffen Morsing novel somewhere out there in your shops, in English of course emoticon

now, thats enough of my life I think, now for what I have really loved for the past 5 or 6 years!

www.Lordsofconquest.com - if anyone plays this game, then let me know asap emoticon

I have mostly played the Medieval Diplomacy Version, but I love the Dragonlords aswell..

I have to go now, but further explanation on the game will come

Edit:
Now that the Runboard update is complete, I can go on with my post here with some explanations on what the games are, and why I love them.

First game is Medieval Diplomacy, I have always been a big fan of the middle ages, and this game has all you want.

the game is set in medieval europe where 23 (I think), realms battle it out for surpremecy of Europe. All realms are controlled by humans players.

The map is made out of Pronvinces, each having a gold value, and some having a town or fortress where its possible to recruit troops.

A realm normally starts with 3 or 4 provinces, including 1 where you can build troops, sometimes two. And the seaside realms have a harbour aswell as their fleet. between the realms there are a bunch of indepentant provinces that you should take to boost your economy, and create a bigger buffer between your border and your vital capital.

Your job is to conquer Europe, either alone, or with up to 3 allies. When the game starts, you get an email list, telling you who is playing what realms. That way you can talk to the other rules, discuss alliance and so on.
Its fairly simple, and if you have good good understanding of basic diplomacy and strategy, then you will find it easy to start off with, and it should be a fun experience for everyone.

now to Dragonlords, basicly the same system (a number of realms and provinces and so on)
But there is an added bonus, Fog of War, those who play strategy games will know what I mean. you can only see the provinces sounding where your troops are, at least until you have scouted further. However, a good easy way to see more of the map is to agreed to sharing recon with other nations, that way you will see what he sees, and he will see what you sees. very usefull for noticing that invasion fleet headed your way before its too late.

But, the biggest difference from the MD game is the realms. here its not Noble Knights or Religius Muslims battling it out, no, its Orcs, Goblins, norse berzerkers, Drows(Dark Elves), Elves, Hobbits, undead, dwarves, humans and pirates!
Add to that the possibility to command Dragons, Ogres, werewolves, Trolls, Treants and so on and you have one of the best games I have ever played.

The games are totally free to play, but there is an option to go whats called Royal, and pay a small fee, which enables to to gain some small advantages (bigger advance in Dragonlords than in MD)

its a turn based game, you download a program to do your turns in, and then each week you send in your orders, and the GM will send you the new turn back when all I have sent it, and the game has been processed.

1 turn = 1 week of real time = ½ year of game time in the game emoticon

Re: Off Topic Things

I agree, I'd love to share some "off topic" stuff & introduce myself in more depth.

I'm Joeri, 30 years old. I live in Leuven, Belguim (also GMT+1), a small town with a big university and clinic. And the hometown for Interbrew, the company that brews Stella Atrois, Jupiler, Becks and Brahma that, as you know are the best beers in the world emoticon
I work in a callcenter as info provider for the Flemish government. At the moment however, I'm home for a couple of weeks, recovering from some serious surgery. There were some malingant cells they had to cut out, makes me wish I had some healing potions emoticon
Now that I'm healthy again and recovering I found some extra time to read and post on these boards.

My main passions are roleplaygames, boardgames and game related message boards emoticon
In my spare time I write reviews for a RPG/War/Boardgame mag called Cerberus2, you can find some of them in my profile on boardgamegeek.com
Some of my recent RPG writings just got approved and should come into the Earthdawn Codex some time next year. Like Starfighter100 my ultimate dream would be a writer only for RPG material.
I've checked Lordsofconquest and it looks promising. I'll probably sign up when i'm back at work. At the moment I'm rather busy with rekindling an old passion of mine; combining WHQ with Spacehulk. As you know, it proved rather exiting emoticon

Come to think of it, I feel an itch for the Ordo Xenos.

Re: Off Topic Things

It is good I think to get a bit more acquainted with one another.

I trust, Cutlass, that you are fully recovering from your physical troubles.

Oh, btw, Starfighter, your PM Inbox is full! emoticon

A Thing or Two about Me

I live in the USA. I am a preacher. I am married to a very special lady. We have no children. I doubt we will, since we married a bit late in life and our income has mostly been very limited.

We do have a house cat. "Meow!" is heard often when the cat is insisting that it hasn't gotten enough attention within the last few hours (or even less time than that).

We recently moved into our new home (not a new house) and hope to pay for it in full long before the end of our thirty-year mortgage.

I love Warhammer Quest! Anybody guess that one? lol

I love to create things. Organizing, defining, explaining, teaching, illustrating, writing and etc.... all seems to come with the package I call "Me".

I chose Old Warrior for my ID, because of my interest in war, war/battle strategies, weaponry and etc.... This interest was greatly fueled by the short history I have (word of mouth) concerning a grandfather of mine, who was a spy in Germany (for the Allies) during WWII.

Of course, my mind has broadened out into sci-fi and fantasy stories, much of which revolves around the war between good and evil, good guys and bad guys. Which leads me into some discussion of my reading habits.

STAR WARS -- I have read about everything I can get my hands on (books I mean).

I really like the series about Rand, the Dragon Reborn. Man, it has been so long since I read it that I forgot the official name of the series. Robert Jordan is the author.

I love to read most of Terry Brooks writtings, especially those stories in the time of the Druids, Elves, and etc.... I think I like the direction his newest series has taken -- combining the more modern Knight of the Word with the Elves from the former times and thus uniting two different times and two different series at the same time. emoticon I am speaking of the two books, Armaggedon's Children (I think that is the title) and The Elves of Cintra.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

BTW Does anyone know the name of a board game/battle game which I will here describe for you?

I bought and played the game long ago, within months or even up to two years before Warhammer Quest came on the scene. I either lost or got rid of the game almost as long ago, and now I am wondering if I might be able to find it again -- even used. It might provide a good foundation for the creation of another WHQ-like game to play online. emoticon

All the models were made of plastic and fit into slotted plastic bases (black I think) -- at least the monsters did . It had various game board sections which linked together as needed according to each mission floor plan.

It had I think four or five two-warrior teams of modern sci-fi type game models. The missions allowed a certain number of teams to go in I think -- so maybe a team or two would sit out a mission occasionally. They had some weaponry and perhaps armour similar to WH-40K. The warrior models were colored to match their two-warrior team. There were two blue warriors, two red, two grey and two green (I think) (maybe two black also).

The game was designed so that each player could control two warriors, but I played solo and played the bad guys too. emoticon They had peg cards to keep track of wounds, kills and other things for each two-warrior team. Each team and/or each warrior had special abilities, weapons and etc.. which made them differ from the others.

The teams could become somewhat upgraded from one mission to the next -- sort of a limited RolePlay-development factor. I recall that they could purchase (or earn some way) various special equipment to help them in their missions -- represented by special cards.

As I recall, there were cards which represented the enemy forces. The cards were shuffled and then a certain number (according to the mission instructions) were placed face down in the various board sections. Whenever the warrior models entered each board section the card(s) would be turned over to reveal the enemies (similar to Monster Event Cards in WQ).

Some of the enemies I remember were as follows:

Legionaires (I think I spelled it right) -- these were numerous but weak ranged fighters (they shot guns!). The color of the models for these was sort of an army green (I think -- USA army green emoticon).

Nazgul (I am sure I mispelled this one -- it was NOT the Nazgul of LOTR) -- It was a very tall, very fast, very strong and almost-impervious-to-all-damage skeletal (bone white in color AND it seemed an undead creature made mostly of bones) creature. One of the missions in the game had the warrior teams running for their lives while this treacherous creature was chasing them through the alien complex (or ship, or whatever). If I remember correctly, this creature was without a ranged attack or was sort of weak with one, but it was dreadfully dangerous in melee.

Neophite (again a name of which I am unsure) -- It was all black and an evil psych type. It was the second most powerful enemy I think. I think there were two of this model in the game.

EDIT: Woohoo! I think I found it! The name is Mutant Chronicles: Seige of the Citadel. I searched through some of the pages and pages of games at Boardgamegeek.com and found it after about 40 minutes of searching! emoticon

Here is a link to where I found it: Mutant Chronicles: Seige of the Citadel

Mutant Chronicles: Seige of the Citadel

Actually, I found the game after having "visions" of what I could remember of the thing. emoticon

I searched long and hard on Boardgamegeek.com and I found it at long last! -- Here is a link to where I found it: Mutant Chronicles: Seige of the Citadel

I have a brand new copy of the game likely coming to me this week.

I am having serious thoughts about making an online version of the game to run similar to the games here. I may eventually convert it into the WHQ system if possible (the mechanics of the game).

I will check out the copyright stuff and, if allowable, I may feel free to scan the needed images and make them the size needed. I have a mediocre digital camera that might assist with some of the monsters, warriors and other 3-D game stuff.

I can help you with the titel of the Serie with Rand emoticon

WoT, or The Wheel of Time. A serie with 12 books (#12 expected early 2009 last I checked)

its about Rand Al'Thor, Mat Caldrun (or something like that), and Perrin something,

also know as, the Dragon Reborn, The gambler and Perrin Goldeneyes.

The leader, the hornblower, and the banner man emoticon

I can also recommend the Sword of Truth serie, as I have enjoyed that very much

first book is: The Wizards First Rule, written by Terry Goodkind.

Never played a boardgame of Mutant Chronicles but I have several rulebooks and sourcebooks of the roleplaying game in PDF. If you want I can share them, the main rulebooks are 45 MB (1st edition) and 336MB (2nd ed.).
Adventures are around 40 MB and scourcebooks between 9 and 150 MB. Send me an email if you're interested.
I've seen you can download the boardgame rules and cards from the BGG website.

As for books, never read Jordan but I'm a huge fan of the Melnibourne saga by Michae Moorcock and The living ships trilogy by Robin Hobb. My newest book is called Dwarfs by Markus Heitz, it looks promising... The book I loved most was Dying Earth by Jack Vance...

Hi guys,
if we're on the subject of books.. i can recommend these ones:

Blood and honour (by simon moon),
some "Waylander" series books (I & II) by David gemmel, and these by the Games Workshop Black Library

Castle "Drachenfels", the "Eisenhorn trilogy"...Xenos, Melleus, & Hereticus (actually i got a couple of spare books from ebay thinking it was 1 book and another came as a set if anyone is interested emoticon

and the cream of the crop, the Dan Abnett "Gaunt's Ghosts" series. emoticon

btw OldWarrior, that game you mention is made by Richard Borg... the same day's of wonder person who made Memoir'44 - a top game indeed which i own too emoticon

so im guessing the mutant one must be good emoticon

Here is my new message board only for Old Warrior's Mutant Chronicles (online version of the board game): (Check it out for how it looks so far)

Old Warrior's Mutant Chronicles

The game is no where near ready, but I have gotten a good start to organizing the message board AND I really like the background image I copied (from boardgamegeek.com), enlarged and darkened a bit. Once I get my hands on the actual game, I am going to have a fun time scanning images and working out the online graphics. emoticon

Thanks, Cutlass, for sending and posting the download info. I downloaded everything I thought useful from boardgamegeek.com. I will try to take a look at the Mutant Chronicles RPG book. For now, and maybe limited to this for ever (I don't know), I will try to make the game fairly true to the board game. But, that book may give me some ideas if I see the need for something, deicde to try to convert the game into a WHQ type of game, or if I decide to try something more complicated.

EDIT: Here is the Game Hopper topic where one may read more about the game and volunteer to play. I need a total of four players besides myself and Starfighter has already posted that he wants to play. So, I now need three more players....

Okay, I'm Paul, 25 and I'm from the UK.
I'm an IT Support Guy and Father of a 17 month old Daughter.
I don't read as much as a I used to, but my current favourite author is Neil Gaiman. I read little fantasy any more as I've burned out on it being an avid reader of it for about 9-10 years - I find it is all fairly derivative of each other.

Paul Bonner's Artwork

Paul Bonner, an artist who has done some masterful paintings of Mutant Chronicles stuff, has given me permission to use some of his work in my Mutant Chronicles message board.

Check out his artwork at
Paul Bonner's Artwork

The website doesn't have all his stuff -- just a very nice, sizeable sampling.

Also, he says that he has a new art book out entitled, Out of the Forests. He says that it has all of his Mutant Chronicles artwork in it.

Here is one image I really like:

Bible Notes - A New Message Board

Bible Notes Message Board
(click the title to visit)

As most of the WHQ gamers probably already know, I am also a preacher.

The above message board I have created to help give more exposure to some ministry-related things I have been doing online (and offline as well).

It is not very full yet, but I will be adding to it as I can.

Much of what is there is not really for discussion though I greatly encourage questions and requests for clarification.

I plan to include some stories (all true) from my life experiences (so you could learn a little more about me there), some comments on ministry, some sermons, outlines, Bible questions and answers, and, of course, my Bible Notes.

If you have any Bible questions you would like to ask, the Bible Questions forum awaits them...

If you visit, please be sure to read the rules before posting (only two forums there allow posting currently). Also, please do NOT refer to me as Old Warrior there. For that message board, I am BibleNote Writer, though my full name may appear in some or many of the things I post there.

Yes, that is likely part of the reason I have been nominated so easily. lol Of course, my hard work may help too, not to mention the fact that I get a bit of help from you guys -- That Log-out animated image at the Bible Notes board is a nice addition I think (thanks, PaulusWHQ, for creating that for me); and, Cutlass' assistance with many images here at my WHQ board has been very helpful.

Congratulations to you, Cutlass, way to go! Maybe some day you will be the "owner" of the "team". emoticon

Old Warrior's Feelings

If you want to see what I recently wrote in my blog about my feeling badly, here is the link:

Old Warrior's Journal (blog)

I really would like to hear any comments from you guys, who seem to know me better than most others on the Internet would, as to whether you think I have been promoting myself, but please read my blog entry from today before replying here (if you even reply). Don't worry, I can handle the truth and will not hold it against you. emoticon

Note: perhaps a few hours of sleep will help me to feel better, since I am rather tired right now.

Well I've read you Blogpost but I don't see the problem. Is it a bad thing to promote yourself? I think this depends on how you do it. If you say: "my stuff is the best out there, all other stuff is bad", then yes: self promotion is a bad thing. If you say: "Come see my stuff, its really good" then I don't see a problem.

I also believe that by promoting this site, MC and stronghold you have attracted more players, which is a good thing because more players= more games= more fun and sometimes even more friends, even though we'll probably never meet.

So don't feel bad about it OW, thanks to you there's still a community playing WHQ (and DWQ) which would otherwise have died out after the shutting down of webquest. Credit where it is due man! Thanks for the games.

Re: Off Topic Things

Thanks to both of you for the encouraging words. I think someone's comment -- meant partly in jest perhaps -- hit me a little hard in my tired-out condition.

Good News! I survived the overnight at work quite well and our special project in the Meat Dept went off with a bang.

Why, I even made another ad-lib joke:

Background -- we now have USDA Choice and USDA Select meats. I was looking at the fresh meat wall with my dept. head and a co-worker from another dept. who volunteered to help us. I became rather vocal about the fact that we do not seem to have much USDA Choice products over against the amount of USDA Select products....

quote:

"Well, we don't seem to have much Choice" {pause... then with great emphasis and pointing to the larger area of USDA Select products}, "but. we certainly have a great Selection!"

(laugh here, just in case you want to know when this is supposed to get funny. emoticon)

It was one of the moments perhaps where you needed to be there. lol emoticon
