I've been out of hospital now for about 2 weeks and i'm doing well but i'm having to adapt. Typing one handed is hideous..... i will get back into this project once i get myself sorted but as you can imagine, i have other priorities at the moment. I will keep you updated when i can start this again because i am still very keen to get it up and running. I've laid alot of the ground work and i was just sorting out some of the details so you could actually see something happening. sorry.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Scoffer)Tue, 11 Dec 2007 06:30:08 +0000 Re: Warhammer Quest Online Game?https://bwqwhqoldwarrior.runboard.com/p171034,from=rss#post171034https://bwqwhqoldwarrior.runboard.com/p171034,from=rss#post171034Hello, Scoffer and others, I am just wondering whether any progress has been made on this project. I am sure it requires a lot of programming to accomplish such a task -- with many mini tasks inherent to it as well. So, I am not complaining. If I were able to do any of the programming, I would be glad to assist, but sadly I am limited to some html, hand-me-down Java script, and whatever other tools I can acquire for free or for really cheap prices. I suppose I could learn the programming stuff, but not likely in my present station in life. nondisclosed_email@example.com (OldWarrior)Sun, 09 Dec 2007 18:17:36 +0000 Re: Warhammer Quest Online Game?https://bwqwhqoldwarrior.runboard.com/p169378,from=rss#post169378https://bwqwhqoldwarrior.runboard.com/p169378,from=rss#post169378Bad centaurs would be great, because I have no desire to fight good ones. The way you explain it really does make some sense to me.nondisclosed_email@example.com (OldWarrior)Thu, 06 Sep 2007 17:55:52 +0000 Re: Warhammer Quest Online Game?https://bwqwhqoldwarrior.runboard.com/p169375,from=rss#post169375https://bwqwhqoldwarrior.runboard.com/p169375,from=rss#post169375Centaurs were a 'canon' race in the edition of Warhammer Fantasy Battle at the time that Warhammer Quest was published, so they were included in the monsters list. However, several new editions later, centaurs have been written out of the Warhammer World and replaced with Centigors, who are basically the same but a bit more obviously beastmen. I believe this is because centaurs are creatures from myth, and could be either good (Chiron) or bad (Nessus). There were centaurs living with the elves, and this was felt to be not quite in keeping with Warhammer, where all of the 'altered' or chimera races (man sized rats, minotaurs, beastmen etc) were creatures of Chaos and thus evil. Therefore Manticores, Cockatrices and Chimera are bad, but Griffins and Dragons are good (well, okay... they can be tamed) because they aren't considered to be the product of chaos. I'm not sure how accurate all that is, but it's how I understand it.nondisclosed_email@example.com (thecustodian)Thu, 06 Sep 2007 16:05:49 +0000 Re: Warhammer Quest Online Game?https://bwqwhqoldwarrior.runboard.com/p169374,from=rss#post169374https://bwqwhqoldwarrior.runboard.com/p169374,from=rss#post169374Well, I note that it says quote:Chaos Centaurs sometimes descend into the ancient Dwarf Holds... Therefore, I think they really did intend for centaurs to be in the game. Be that as it may though, much of such descriptive language is I think what Thecustodian likes to call "Fluff" and not really intended to dictate how the game is played -- at least in reference to the mechanics of it (which includes rolling on the monster tables and etc...) But, if the end game (this online coded WQ game) were to leave out the centaur, I wouldn't shed too many tears, because their 2DD and very accurate shooting have often threatened the lives of, and even killed, my warriors, before they could close the distance. EDIT: added the picture link. nondisclosed_email@example.com (OldWarrior)Thu, 06 Sep 2007 14:30:17 +0000 Re: Warhammer Quest Online Game?https://bwqwhqoldwarrior.runboard.com/p169333,from=rss#post169333https://bwqwhqoldwarrior.runboard.com/p169333,from=rss#post169333Thanks Spinningdice. So, I've added the Centaur, Ogre And Minotaur. For the Centaur: I've added him in 2x2 squares and 1x2 squares. Models of horses and wolves, etc... are 1x2 But perhaps you'll want to use a simple Large base (2x2) and Small base for easy programming. I did not include a regular Centaur because the rulebook says: quote:More often found on the plains of the Northern Wastes, the brutish Chaos Centaurs sometimes descend into the ancient Dwarf Holds along with Beastmen and Chaos Warriors in search of treasure. Their vicious tempers can only be sated by deeds of the most bloodthirsty nature. I've seen that I forgot to make the small mosters transparent, I can still do this if needed. As for doors, they prove to be a bit difficult, it's hard to make cool doors, especially with a top down view. I tried my hand at birds-eye perspective last nigh but failed miserably. Now I'm thinking of doing them by hand or by asking my friend 3d Artist to make them for me. I'll let you know when I come up with something. Meanwhile I've also poured the images in a handy HTML format for easy viewing, comments are welcome as always. Perhaps you were waiting to create them in a larger (2-square version). The pictures all look good to me. I noticed that you put "(bull)" in front of the word centaur. If I am not mistaken, a bull centaur, in WQ anyway, is a centaur whose upper half is a Chaos Dwarf's torso, whereas the DL-1 centaur (not bull) is something else. Also, the WQ DL-1 centaur comes with a bow, whereas the bull centaur does not. Furthermore, the DL-1 centaur gets 2 Damage Dice, whereas the bull centaur gets 1/2 (5+), meaning that it gets 2 Damage Dice only if its to hit roll is a 5 or 6 -- very similar to the chaos dwarf DD. I am just trying to help with having all the original monsters of WQ. Let me know if I have missed something -- not trying to pick on you at all. nondisclosed_email@example.com (OldWarrior)Fri, 24 Aug 2007 17:17:12 +0000 Re: Warhammer Quest Online Game?https://bwqwhqoldwarrior.runboard.com/p168978,from=rss#post168978https://bwqwhqoldwarrior.runboard.com/p168978,from=rss#post168978I have one I think. I've finished compiling the pictures needed for all LVL 1 monsters. I've got 89 pictures for the 35 monsters, some are different for the type of weapon they carry (spear/sword/bow) and every monster has 2-3-4 versions. Now I'll start the tedious process of editing them all to make sure we get no copyright problems. I'll start with one version of each monster and I'll let you guys know when I'm done. I'll be creating them at 60x60px size to be placed on 65x65px tiles. One thing though, should I create a transparent background (more work) or would a white or black background suffice? As for gold and XP, Personally I like the rules as they are (killer gets the gold) with the additional option for GM's to provide extra XP to individual players, for solo games a 40-20-20-20 division should do the trick. Changing warrior parties is, I believe a must but shouldnt prove difficult.  nondisclosed_email@example.com (Cutlass)Tue, 21 Aug 2007 09:14:08 +0000 Re: Warhammer Quest Online Game?https://bwqwhqoldwarrior.runboard.com/p168875,from=rss#post168875https://bwqwhqoldwarrior.runboard.com/p168875,from=rss#post168875Gold Sharing? I think it would be best to give the gold to the warrior who gets the kill -- according to the game's rules -- for the solo games. But, I would like to hear some other gamers' opinions too. I think it would be good -- at least in GMed and multi-player games -- to have the option of gold -sharing. I don't know how difficult that would be to code. Could there be a turn-on turn-off gold-sharing option? Gold-sharing Ratio Ideas: Hmmm.... If a gold-sharing thing happened, I would recommend either a 25% for each warrior per kill or the warrior who gets the kill would get something like 35 or 40% of the gold for that monster and the others would split what is left (40/20/20/20, OR 34/22/22/22 for example). The latter idea includes the concept that warriors should be given some type of incentive (in my opinion -- and in addition to the incentive of survival) to strive for numerous kills. Specific Warrior Types and Gold-Sharing I don't know if it would be possible to later code a particular warrior type so that he would automatically share his gold (based upon a chance factor). The Ogre, Martial Artist and Friendly Giant (to mention the most prominent in my mind) all share their monster gold part of the time. Balancing of the Gold If the party's leadership is rotated from one adventure to the next, as I like to do much of the time, I think that would help to balance the kills per warrior in the overall game -- assuming the warrior party stays together for their entire careers. When multi-player and GMed games are developed, I think the possibility of warriors changing parties would be nice -- or joining a certain party because they joined a certain game. GM's also love to implement their own gold versus experience rules. Many times they give out experience for good Roleplaying. Some only give experience for monster kills and give gold as part of treasures and special findings or as bounty for monster kills back in a settlement.nondisclosed_email@example.com (OldWarrior)Tue, 21 Aug 2007 06:37:40 +0000 Re: Warhammer Quest Online Game?https://bwqwhqoldwarrior.runboard.com/p168873,from=rss#post168873https://bwqwhqoldwarrior.runboard.com/p168873,from=rss#post168873Sound advice about not taking for granted i didn't forget about the escape table and it shouldn't be too hard to implement it, just a case of rolling dice and applying the results. it's basically going to be the same for the traveling table(between adventures), random events, monster table etc so once i get one done all the others will fall into place. End of combat gold. Waiting until all the monsters are killed could be a problem because the software would have to remember who killed what. The way i was going to work it would be if you attack a monster and kill it you get the gold the moment it dies. That's the way we used to play the tabletop version but i'm not sure if that's how the rules state it or if it's just something we did. i could try and build it in for when all monsters on the board have been killed but it may be overly complicated (coding wise) for something that sounds so simple. While we are on the matter of gold from monsters does everyone want it the way the rules say ie "if you kill it you get the gold" or would you want some sort of gold share thing going on. What we tended to find was that 9 times out of 10 who ever went first in a turn would get most of the gold and kill all the easy monsters. At later levels though the one that went last would tend to get most of the gold because he would go round and mop up everything that was wounded by the other players. nondisclosed_email@example.com (Scoffer)Tue, 21 Aug 2007 06:00:29 +0000 Escaping a Dungeon -- Escape Table -- End of Combat Stuffhttps://bwqwhqoldwarrior.runboard.com/p168867,from=rss#post168867https://bwqwhqoldwarrior.runboard.com/p168867,from=rss#post168867The Escape Table I am dealing with some warriors that might presently decide to use the very dangerous Escape Table. This made me think about this game and how that could work. As I understand it, the Escape Table may be used by any single warrior at any time during an adventure. They just roll the 2D6, look up the result and live with it unless they have luck to re-roll. So, I mention this here, just in case Scoffer might have forgotten it -- which I doubt. But, I was thinking just in case it needed to be implemented early on in the coding.... End of Combat Gold Also, related to this is the idea that warriors do not get the gold for their kills in any combat until that combat has been successfully completed -- meaning that there are no more monsters on the board. If a warrior uses the Escape Table in the middle of a combat -- the most likely time I might add -- then this might necessitate that the coding prevents any gain of gold from that combat until the actual successful end of the combat. If this cannot be done or would be too difficult in the coding, then it seems to me that the warrior would just have all kills (even from partial combats) added to his total. So, escaping in this case could turn out better (gold-wise) than in the table-top version of the game. Back on the Board (Escape Table Results) There are also two or three results that leave the "escaping" warrior back in the dungeon (same board section -- from which he started to escape, or the same board section as the rest of the party -- assuming wherever the Lantern currently is). This seems to me another difficulty in the coding of he Escape Table for this game. Just thought I would mention these things. I am thinking that programmers should take nothing for granted (since computers only do what they are programmed, step-by-step to do) -- and we non-programmers, should not assume that a programmer has done anything in particular until he says so.... meaning that we shouldn't take anything for granted either. nondisclosed_email@example.com (OldWarrior)Tue, 21 Aug 2007 05:36:53 +0000 Re: Warhammer Quest Online Game?https://bwqwhqoldwarrior.runboard.com/p168536,from=rss#post168536https://bwqwhqoldwarrior.runboard.com/p168536,from=rss#post168536connection loss will not be a problem. The way asp.net works is that when you first request a page from the site it creates a session. a session will last for 20 mins but the time period will be reset everytime a new request is made (either by clicking a button or link etc) you can also put things into the "end of session event" this is basically when you log out or after the 20 mins have expired. the obvious thing to put in here would be to save everything back to the database so you could carry on when you got back. just on a side note i've been rummageing round the net to find a free asp.net host http://wquest.somee.com/WebForm2.aspx this is the only one i could find that works (there are only 3 and 2 of them are only trial periods). i can put up demos and stuff as i build it but i only have 10mb of space which isn't a lot. i cant put a database on here either but it should be fine for showing you guys the progress so far. OW EDIT: I added the picture link.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Scoffer)Sun, 12 Aug 2007 11:09:35 +0000 Loss of Connectionhttps://bwqwhqoldwarrior.runboard.com/p168523,from=rss#post168523https://bwqwhqoldwarrior.runboard.com/p168523,from=rss#post168523Loss of Connection: I find this a difficult thing whenever I am playing an online game (usually Yahoo! Pool) and my connection is broken for just a minute. I usually lose my place in the game. I know this issue was mentioned by Scoffer early on -- but, I have a new thought... hehe Logged In Status: As this relates to the coded online Warhammer Quest game, I think it would be nice, if possible, that the server/game maintained the current status of the game (and/or warrior for multiplayer games) for a certain window of time based upon the fact that the player had NOT yet clicked on a "logout" option somewhere. By way of illustration, I have found that losing my connection does not affect my logged in status on Runboard. So, whatever windows I had open at the time of my connection loss, still work the same once the connection is restored. So, I am wondering if this or something similar could be done in the online game. Game Saving Again: Or, even better, if the game could be automatically saved -- whether or not the above-mentioned is an option -- so that someone could rush off to work or school and then resume the game when they return. I know this subject has already been addressed, but I thought mentioning it here would help with the context of the "logged in status" idea. It would be really sad, after maybe 30 minutes or more of playing, to be nearly finished with an Objective Room and lose all the progress for the whole adventure, just because my DSL blinked out for one minute. Sometimes my DSL blinks out several times in a row -- over a 15 to 30 mintue time period. All-in-all it is rather reliable though. Note: I really appreciate Scoffer's patience and understanding as he wades through all my rantings. nondisclosed_email@example.com (OldWarrior)Sun, 12 Aug 2007 08:44:41 +0000 Re: Warhammer Quest Online Game?https://bwqwhqoldwarrior.runboard.com/p168504,from=rss#post168504https://bwqwhqoldwarrior.runboard.com/p168504,from=rss#post168504Another comment about the size of the map, tiles, warrior and monster images: I personally prefer the 65 x 65 tile size, just because it is closer to the original board game size than anything I have played with online so far. However, I am more concerned about the functionality of the game. Therefore, I think that whatever works best in the game as Scoffer is able to build it would be likely the most acceptible for everyone. Side comment: No need for a chat feature on a solo game -- at least I don't think so. Here is another matter for the multi-player games perhaps. Oh, Cutlass, if I am not mistaken, one set of the monster picture collection with which you assisted me was in 75x75 pixels. I think this would be a simple matter with your software to resize to 65x65. (150x75 resized to 130x65 for two-tile monsters and etc....). If you need anything from me, well you know how to contact me. nondisclosed_email@example.com (OldWarrior)Fri, 10 Aug 2007 19:06:38 +0000 Another Issue -- Trading Treasure, Equipment & Etc...https://bwqwhqoldwarrior.runboard.com/p168500,from=rss#post168500https://bwqwhqoldwarrior.runboard.com/p168500,from=rss#post168500Trading Treasure, Equipment, and Gold: One of the nice things about the normal WQ game is that warriors can trade with one another. I know this will likely be possible in a GMed -- editable game -- if coded with editing options; but, I am thinking of the solo and multi-player games without a GM. This is of great concern to me, because I am always trying -- or encouraging others -- to take advantage of this feature in the game. Sometimes, warriors get really good deals for both parties involved in the trade. Perhaps whatever engine or interface would be used to trade at the shops in settlements could also be used or adapted for use for in-party trading.nondisclosed_email@example.com (OldWarrior)Fri, 10 Aug 2007 12:03:23 +0000 Re: New Warrior Imageshttps://bwqwhqoldwarrior.runboard.com/p168491,from=rss#post168491https://bwqwhqoldwarrior.runboard.com/p168491,from=rss#post168491quote:Oldwarrior wrote: Cutlass could really get busy.
